*History of the Project*
- Multiple recycling efforts have been tried in the past from
referendums to petitions
- Urbana currently has a mandate that states that each single or
multiple family household must pay $2.50 a month for recycling services
- They have two companies that simultaneously come around and pick up
recyclables each week
- This project wants to mirror and unite the Urbana program with
Champaign
- Project began a year and 1/2 ago by two graduate students that found
a need for this on campus and created a business plan
- It was presented to SECS last year, but the organization did not
come with only a limited amount of time
- 2nd semester and summer, planning and ideas have been tossed around
and this is where we are today
- We are basically JUST BEGINNING to form committees and set deadlines
and dates for when things need to be done by each committee
*SO, Who are we?*
- *C.O.R.E - Community Organized Recycling Efforts*
- Goal: to increase awareness, participation, and resources in
recycling throughout Champaign and to create a community wide effort to
increase recycling awareness and importance
- Focus: to begin building support with students and extend
outward to the entire Champaign community
- Approach: get people involved in recycling, critical goal to
SHOW that people want/desire recycling
- Strive to achieve recycling in multi-family homes throughout
Champaign and promote recycling practices to single family homes with
recycling options
- *What we are not:*
- **an attack on Champaign and University recycling practices
- not a sole group trying to achieve a pass of legislation and
change, we can't do it alone
- not a grassroots organization or protest
- we don't want to send just a message, we want to demonstrate
recycling and that it can be done
- *Challenges*
- People - getting people to participate and getting enough man
power
- Internal Organization - making sure that committees are
completing the necessary tasks at hand
- *Who is currently involved?*
- SECS
- Engineers without Borders
- Greek System
- A LOT more to come
- *What do we need?* There are *6 committees* that will get the job
done (bold and highlighted below)
- *Outreach *
- Corresponding, gaining support and connecting with
multiple groups across campus and across the Champaign community
- *VERY IMPORTANT AND CRUCIAL IN THE FIRST STAGES OF THE
PROJECT*
- Ex: Greek System, Student Organizations, College Council
Boards, Champaign Community groups, University Dorms
with/without recycling
(RA's), Apartment companies, Businesses, Restaurants, Bars,
Boy Scout/ Girl
Scout groups, local high schools/grade schools
- *Events*
- Planning and organizing all main events to promote our
issue and create awareness about our vision
- Idea for 1st event - working with a class that does
environmental event planning to create an awareness concert
event that will
bring multiple groups together and bring even more support
from different
areas of the campus
- 2nd idea for the first event - creating a meeting forum
that will bring MULTIPLE groups together (all part of the outreach
committee) to discuss and demonstrate what integral role each
organization
could have in the project
- Basically planning events, contacting bands and venues,
setting a date, etc.
- *Marketing/Advertising/Publicity*
- Solidify a PR campaign
- Sending out emails to multiple list-servs
- Website
- Facebook Group
- DI/radio/Buzz correspondence
- *Research*
- Find ALL the answers to all of the holes in our current
research
- We have some resources, information, figures, numbers,
but they need to be analyzed and holes need to be filled
- Ex: polls, surveys, finding exact past efforts in
Champaign, more figures and numbers, logistics of actually getting
legislation passed, grants/funding options
- *Funding and Finances*
- Search and apply for grants, aid, and find costs of
projects and events
- Set up a budget for events
- Plan what exactly we need for certain projects and how
much they would cost
*Timeline - VERY LOOSE RIGHT NOW*, to become more specific after next week's
meeting
- 1st Event - October
- Grants and funding applications - Sept. -Oct.
- Know what needs to be done for Spring - end of 1st semester
PHEW!!! That's a *general overview* of what is going on with the
project....now we just need *YOUR HELP!!!*
Basically the aim of this first meeting was to let everyone know what was
going on, what our ideas were, where we want to direct the project, and a
simplified description of committees. I would hope *for all of you that
could not attend today's meeting *to *PLEASE email me *(ccarrol2@uiuc.edu)
which committee you are interested in helping out. *If you* *already signed
up for a committee *today, you will be receiving a more detailed list of
what we want to see out of each committee for next week's meeting so you all
can get brainstorming!!
We want to be able to meet in our specific groups next week to set a lot of
dates, set a lot of timelines for goals, and solidify *EXACTLY* what each
committee will be focusing on. In this general meeting today, we just wanted
you to get a feel for what's going on and what there is to offer, but next
meeting you will be actually gettin' down to business!!!
We will meet *NEXT THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 20th*, at* 5:30pm* in the *BASEMENT
of the YMCA.*
If you can't be there, that is ok just email me and tell me you will not be
able to attend. BUT we want to see as many of you there as can possibly
attend!
Please email Aaron (apollac2@gmail.com) or me ( ccarrol2@uiuc.edu) if you
have ANY questions, comments, concerns, ideas, or if you just feel like
saying hello.
Have a FANtastic evening and *THANK YOU AGAIN!!* I hope you all are as
excited as Aaron and I are about this project....here we go lets do it!!!
Cassie and Aaron
PS: You will recieve an email with a blurb to present to your group on
general information about the campaign and meeting time/place this weekend
PPS: *TELL YOUR FRIENDS AND BRING THEM TOO!!* the more the merrier :-)
